The Train Wreck That is Straight Talk Radio on Gay Parents Pt. I
Posted on | December 15, 2005
So the topic of today’s edition of Straight Talk Radio was the first in a two-part series on growing up with gay parents. When I checked the site this morning to see what the topic du jour was, I was practically drooling with anticipation once I saw it because the shit that fundies represent as fact often conflicts with actual scientific studies by groups like the American Psychological Association, aka people who know what the fuck they are talking about in regards to gay parents.I started off listening to the broadcast wondering if poor Stephen needs some pain killers. He began the broadcast kissing his ass about how he was being quoted in USA Today or appearing on some shows to decry Brokeback Mountain that my back started to hurt. He then teased us saying he is waiting for confirmation about appearing on another show and how Straight Talk Radio listeners will be the first to know.I do have to get Stephen credit giving a disclaimer that the story of gay parenting they were presenting to us was not representative of homosexual parents or children they raise and then began to introduce us to Charles Mitchell. Stephen did manage to annoy me not even three minutes into the broadcast by referring to Charles’ two male parents as his “quote two fathers unquote” implying that the two men who raised him and his brothers were not his fathers. Hate to tell you this Stephen but what defines a father is not just biology. Any male who assumes a parenting role is a father. Period. Get over it.We then learn that Charles and his brothers were molested in this home by friends of the gay couple that adopted them. This apparently drove one of them to idolize Jeff Gannon and become a gay prostitute. Unfortunately he was not careful and contracted HIV and later died. At this point I got really suspicious that Stephen was going to imply that these kids would never have been molested had they been put into a home with a heterosexual couple. Unfortunately I am not psychic nor can I call Latoya Jackson, Dionne Warwick, or Miss Cleo for confirmation on that.
Stephen then turns it over to “special correspondent” David who then starts the ‘Masturbating to the Bible’ session early by stating that there was a god ordained purpose to having a man and a woman. What our special correspondent neglects to remember a number of things. The first of these is that the verb parenting has two different meanings. The first is the biological one meaning the male and female whose gametes combine to form a zygote. The second one is used to describe raising the resulting offspring.
My favorite though is how David decides to blame homosexuals for the push away from the “proven model” for raising children. Excuse me? The act of divorce alone pushes away from your precious male/female model of parenting. So does the death of a parent. Nice job spitting in the face of all those single parents who have busted their asses off trying to provide the best for their kids.
I am going to save the specifics of the interview until after tomorrow’s broadcast as this entry is starting to get a little long already. One thing I have to note from listening to this is that these people are trapped in strict gender roles. That somehow men are completely incapable of being nurturing like a woman is. It is not that men are incapable of being that nurturing, it is that we are socialized that way. Moronic assholes like these Straight Talk Radio folk just like to perpetuate those strict roles. I wonder if the “special correspondent” is one of those “women should be barefoot and pregnant” types.
