Poor Rick

Rick Santorum (R-PA) has to be my most favorite US Senator ever. He is just so good for a laugh with his outlandish comments and such that sometimes make me wonder about his pathological state. Especially his little rants equating gay marriage with incest, bigamy, and beastiality. His latest bit of trouble is that he has backpedaled on his endorsement of teaching “Intelligent Design”. ID of course is the new buzz-word for Creationism which invariably injects God/Allah/Jehovah/Cher into the mix although its supporters say otherwise.Dover, Pennsylvania, became a lightning rod for the cause when its school board voted to require teaching ID in the classrooms. The decision was challenged in court citing the traditional separation of church and state. The judge in the case, John E. Jones III, ruled that teaching ID was unconstitutional and felt that the school board members responsible for passing the resolution lied under oath. Prior to Jones’ decision however, the citizens of Dover took matters into their own hands and removed those members from office which earned them a threat of biblical retribution from Pat Robertson.Now that ID is losing steam, Santorum has flip-flopped on the issue and come out against it even though in 2002 he wrote an op-ed for the Washington Times and stated “is a legitimate scientific theory that should be taught in science classes.” Now he states that “As far as intelligent design is concerned, I really don’t believe it has risen to the level of a scientific theory at this point that we would want to teach it alongside of evolution.” He now favors teaching the controversy surrounding evolution.

If his sagging approval ratings were not enough trouble for Rick, his reversal on ID has brought him the wrath of the American Family Association. The AFA of course is the group of homophobes who pressured Ford in to withdrawing advertising and such from gay publications with the threat of a boycott which Ford promptly backpedaled on in the face of a firestorm of criticism over caving into the AFA. I absolutely love the fact that the AFA is going after one of Congress’ most vocal opponents of homosexuality.
