Trashing the Memory of Your Own Son
Posted on | December 27, 2005
While Margaret Cho is on vacation, some of her friends have been filling in on her blog and making posts. On December 19th, Keri Smith made a post called “Nathan’s Legacy” informing Margaret’s readers of the death of Nathan Christofferson who was a writer and gay rights activist in California.I had absolutely no clue who Nathan was when Keri made that post. Today though my blood was boiling when another post was made to Margaret’s blog with a link entitled “A Reminder of What We’re Up Against - Our Tragic Loss” in which a friend of Nathan’s described his “funeral”.
From the account, Nathan was stuck living in a home environment that pushed him well into DSM territory. His parents were homophobic and were leaders of a right-wing “Christian” church. According to Molly the funeral was pretty much a white-washed affair with it being nothing Nathan would have wanted. Instead of speaking about Nathan’s work for equality he was apparently described as having “an affliction” and such. There is a train of speakers who talked about Nathan’s “Demons” and such… yeah his “Demons” apparently organized the funeral. The minister’s sermon said that Nathan was called home by God before “Satan” could torment him further. And by “Satan” I mean his parents. In a final insult the family asked that donations be made in Nathan’s name to “New Creation Ministry” which is the religious front for an ex-gay group.
Reading stuff like that pisses me off to no end. When I read things about parents doing shit like this to their gay children makes me think mothers of “crack babies” are more deserving of children than these so-called “Christians”. It makes my hair hurt trying to wrap my brain around why two individuals who supposedly love their son unconditionally would spit on his memory. In fact, they did not just spit on his memory, the whipped it out and took a piss on it. And these are the same kind of people who say gays cannot make good parents. Molly is a bit more tame in her words saying his family had not intentionally killed him. I however would not be so sparing but I will save that bit vitriol for later.
