Boycott This!

I read an editorial in the Detroit Free Press yesterday commenting on the recent controversy surrounding Ford and the American Family Association. For those of you not familiar with that particular drama, basically what happened was Ford caved into the AFA’s homophobic demand about advertising in gay publications and such which caused a huge backlash amonth LGBT organizations causing Ford to reverse course.The editorial has a great line in it about the effect of boycotts based on bullshit like what the AFA spouts:

“boycotts based on bigotry rarely succeed, partly because they prompt protests from those who believe in equality.”

This is exactly how I feel on the issue. For every one person who boycotts a company for pro-gay policies, there is a gay/progressive person who will take their place and switch to that company in defiance of the boycott. And in the matter with Ford, whether they really did cave into the AFA or not since they claim it was just a coincidental end to the campagins, they decided that the estimated $610 billion market they wanted a piece of was much more important than a bunch of hate-filled “Christians”.
