More Moore

Posted on | January 12, 2006

What a joy it is to wake up and find out that former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore is running for the Republican nomination for that state’s governor. Moore lost his position as Chief Justice after he willfully violated a federal court order to remove a stone monument of the Ten Commandments from the state court house that he had installed. Moore is known in the gay community for his staunch anti-gay beliefs such as a decision in 2002 where he voted with the majority to deny a lesbian custody of her children because according to him homosexuality is "abhorrent, immoral, detestable, a crime against nature, and a violation of the laws of nature."

Part of me wants him to win because his governorship will be a disaster to the state across the board because pretty much nothing will get done. I say this because his his religious zeal denies him the comforts of things like rationality and such and his evangelism will result in the state beging mired in federal lawsuits and, if his past behavior toward the federal judiciary is any indicator, the state will probably be on the reciving end of a few fines.

I have a feeling though that he will lose because even though he had the support of Republicans during the Ten Commandments fiasco, they backed off once the federal courts stepped in, ordered the monument to be removed, and threatned the state with fines. Moore is definitely a problem with fiscally conservative "old-school" Republicans and I hope they defeat Moore soundly. We all know that if he wins those old-school Republicans will swing their votes to Moore in the November election given Alabama’s desire to stay firmly entrenched in the Victorian era.
