FRC Spots First Horseman of the Marriage Apocalypse
Posted on | January 13, 2006
Today has been a slow news day it seems so I went out hunting among the "enemy" bookmarks in Firefox and ran across a little gem over at the Family Research Council. Under the headline ‘Canadian Justice Department urges legalizing polygamy’ it reads "Hard to gloat that you’re right when it is society that crumbles as a result." They link to an article in the Globe & Mail about a report supporting the decriminalization of polygamy in Canada. Polygamy was one of the apocalyptic horsemen predicted by FRC and other religious organizations in the wake of the Lawrence v Texas decision decriminalizing sodomy and the legalization of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts.
The report referred to in the Globe & Mail looks at the issue more rationally than religious people do. Monogamous marriage is a matter of personal preference and not one of "morality" as religious people paint it. Personally if three or more people love each other and want to make a commitment to each other then I see no reason why they should not, especially in light of the fact it does not affect me at all. While accepting polygamy on a governmental level presents some challenges such as tax benefits, whether companies want to offer insurance to multiple spouses, and other such logistical items, polygamy does not herald the the destruction of society like these drama queens at the FRC and other such groups claim. The call for decriminalization is based on tangible damage polygamy supposedly inflicts on society and I have not heard of any data on the subject.
But I guess we will just have to wait and see if the other three horsemen, Accepted Pedophilia, Accepted Incest, and Accepted Bestiality show up.
