Brokeback Mountain Takes 4 Golden Globes

Posted on | January 16, 2006

Congratulations to Brokeback Mountain for winning four out of seven Golden Globe Awards in the following categories:

  • Best Screenplay - Motion Picture (Larry McCurthy & Diana Ossana)
  • Best Song - Motion Picture - "A Love That Will Never Grow Old" (Gustavo Santaolalla & Bernie Taupin)
  • Best Director - Motion Picture (Ang Lee)
  • Best Motion Picture - Drama

John Williams and ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ beat out Gustavo Santaolalla and ‘Brokeback Mountain for Best Original Score - Motion Picture. I guess we can kind of let it slide since it is John Williams. Heath Ledger lost out to Phillip Seymour Hoffman who played the title role in Capote. I guess that one is not so bad either since Capote is also a gay film. Michelle Williams lost the Best Supporting Actress for her role as Heath Ledger’s wife to Rachel Weisz for her role in The Constant Gardener.

I was also glad that the movie Paradise Now won for best foreign film. I missed seeing this at The Michigan Theatre but I saw a preview when I saw ‘Jesus is Magic’ and it looked very good. Plus with all the anti-Arab sentiment around now I think it is fabulous that a Palestinian film was nominated and won. Definitely will check it out on DVD.

I also loved the little dialogue between the principal cast of Will & Grace when they presented the award for Best TV Drama -

Debra Messing: To have a successful television show is like catching lightning in a bottle. Everything has to be perfect.
Sean Hayes: First you have to have three dimensional characters viewers can recognize and identify with.
Megan Mullally: Then you have to have great writers who create story arcs that are surprising and compelling.
Eric McCormack: And you need gay people.
Sean Hayes: Come to think of it, the same rules work for cowboy movies.

Felicity Huffman won Best Actress for her role in TransAmerica as well. TransAmerica also starred Calpernia Addams who was the girlfriend of Army Private Barry Winchell who was bludgeoned to death by fellow soldiers because of his relationship with Addams, who was a pre-op transsexual at the time, led them to believe he was gay.

You let things slide just because a movie or character is gay? What about the artistic merit of a film? Brokeback Mountain was superb, but let’s be reasonable. What about the people behind the camera who might be gay? Other movies could qualify.
