Conservatives in Canada Win Minority Government
Posted on | January 24, 2006
I am definitely a little disappointed in the election results in my "second home" of Canada. Canadians decided not to return the reigning Liberals
to power again and instead gave Stephen Harper and the conservative Tories a chance. Thankfully it is a minority government with the Tories winning 124 seats in Parliament and the Liberals have only 21 less at 103. The remaining 80 seats were divided between the Bloc Quebecois and the New Democratic Party which won 51 and 29 seats respectively so Harper will have to to gain their support on every piece of legislation he wants to pass unlike here where if Bush wants it, Congressional voting is usually just a token formality. The final seat is filled by an Independent MP.
The articles I have been reading on the results seem to point the the 124/103 split between the Liberals is more of an issue of letting someone else have a chance rather than Canada descending back into the Dark Ages like we have seen here in the US. Of course there is still the whole wait-and-see thing in regards to how Harper decides to deal with the gay marriage issue as well as whether or not he will plant his lips on George W. Bush’s ass.

Dear AF, while I can understand your why you don’t find comfort in the election of a conservative govt in Canada, understand that a majority of Canadians do find comfort in the election results, hope the conservatives will pursue a different course, and trust that –unlike you– electing conservatives won’t place Canada in the Dark Ages.
Like with the German elections, the Japanese elections, Iraqi elections and now Canada, large populations are coming to the realization that conservative tenets, conservative leaders and strong, free markets have more to offer than big statist welfare-centered govts.
I take heart that the world is reshaping itself into something RR would have been very comfortable living in; the march of freedom and liberty from govt tyranny continues. Canada has taken it’s first step toward greater freedom and liberty.
That’s gotta be a good thing, no?

A majority of Canadian’s *didn’t* elect a Conservative government. The Tories got 124 seats. To get a majority they would have needed 155 seats so therefore they are 21 seats short.
The majority of Canadians voted *against* the Tories.

Found your from your comment on Pam’s House Blend. I’ve got a link to a poll I think you’d like: they polled CPC voters and asked them why they voted CPC, and what parts of the CPC platform they wanted and what parts they didn’t want.
The results are… interesting.
(And, of course, I’ll pimp my own journal in the reposting.)

Hi Angry
Don’t worry about us. The Conservatives are practically hogtied.
And they don’t have enough votes to defeat gay marriage.
We’ll give the neocons and the wingnuts a little time to show Canadians who they really are.
A little rope to hang themselves.
And when they are half dead we’ll finish them off.
