Another Student Kicked Out of School

Another day and another gay student kicked out of a private religious school over their sexuality. This time it comes from Arkansas where twenty-two year-old Michael Quinn was dismissed for postings he made on his blog. Guinn attended John Brown University which, like many religious schools, requires its students to adhere to a strict code of conduct. One of the most famous cases of this was the suspension of Julie Stoffer from Bingham Young University after she appeared on MTV’s "The Real World" when the show filmed in New Orleans. Because he was openly gay, JBU administration added some extra clauses. As you can imagine, the posting that university punished him over broke one of those rules.
The problem with Guinn happened after he posted photos of himself in drag. According to him they were taken prior to his admission to to JBU. Someone anonymously e-mailed a link to them to school administration. Such photos were in violation of code of conduct Guinn had agreed to. The school says Guinn can return next semester but Guinn says he will not.
I have trouble feeling any sympathy towards individuals in situations like Guinns. They put themselves in this position to begin with so why should the world heave and shift to one side over it? If JBU is a private university and therefore can set its own rules for how it wants its students to conduct themselves. It may seem victorian and stupid to us but as long as students are willing to adhere to it.
