Because Bigotry Means More Than Our Soldiers’ Lives

Posted on | January 25, 2006

It is rather shocking to me to read that we have over ten thousand military careers under "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell". Hundreds of those careers were in the medical field which are not only expensive to replace but also take time. Not to mention the fact that our troops are for the most part over in Iraq right now and getting injured on a daily basis. Yes the number is "small" but are not are troops supposed to be worth it?

The Pentagon is, of course, downplaying it by saying that homosexuals can come back and do the same job but under different classifications like a contractor or working for another federal agency. But why would they come back? You make them feel unwelcome as soldiers, why would any person discharged under DADT want to go back into an environment where they are clearly not wanted?

As someone who dissents against the war in Iraq and the tactics of the Bush Administration, I am accused of being a traitor, that I "embolden our enemies", and that I "hurt the moral of our troops". But those that rabidly support the war seem fine with robbing our troops of Arabic linguists like Kyle Lawson and the others swept out by DADT, they have been robbed of medical care staff, and even worse we have a report that a majority of our casualties could have been prevented if they had been given proper body army armor. Groups here at home who oppose DADT earn themselves a spot on the list of lucky individuals being illegally spied on by the Bush Administration. So you tell me who is really undermining the troops.
