An Ever So Slightly Suspicious Firing
Posted on | January 26, 2006
Dr. Juanita Kurton has over thirty-five years teaching experience, carries two Masters degrees and a PhD in special education. She has support from colleagues and parents. She put in the requisite three years at Marion E. McKeown School in New Jersey’s Hampton School District. Dr. Kurton however was denied tenure and even worse she was fired. The official reason was that Dr. Kurton, in all her years of experience, was poor planning and preparation.
The disparity between her education/experience and the school board’s reasons for denying tenure and firing Dr. Kurton is enough to raise suspicions, but the fact she was the only black teacher and the only lesbian also make the board’s decision more so. Dr. Kurton is asking the board to reconsider its position and it has three days to do so. If they maintain their current position, Dr. Kurton has the option of filing a discrimination lawsuit because unless the board of education has a lot of evidence they are not sharing with anyone, this is pretty much an open and shut case in her favor.
I really wish these school boards and other such entities would just stop it with their illegal behavior. It never does anyone any good and just ends up fucking the students and other teachers over when they have to defend themselves against lawsuits that they know they will lose. It is ridiculous. If the parents like her, you keep her unless there is some sort of documented problem. Board members that cross parents seldom remain board members in the next election.
