Can We Get Over Methamphetamines Yet?

Posted on | January 27, 2006

When will this hysteria over methamphetamines come to an end? I am getting sick and tired of all these insane regulations and rules because a few morons get high and do stupid shit. First we see the removal of cough medicine from store shelves because it has pseudoephedrine in it which is used to make methamphetamines. Then we see logs where our purchases of cough medicine are tracked by state and federal authorities. And now Tennessee has come up with a registry modeled after the sex offender ones where people convicted of manufacturing meth will be placed on display. The idea is that landlords and such can go to this site and see if potential tenants are meth manufacturers or not. After seven years, individuals on the list can appeal to be removed.

To me this is just another exercise in futility and wasteful government spending. There is not a landlord I know of that does not conduct a criminal background search on potential tenants. I myself have had two searches done for the express purposed of leasing an apartment. Now I am no expert on criminal records, but I would imagine a conviction for things like methamphetamine manufacturing and possession with intent to distribute would probably show up on a criminal background search as felony convictions usually do.

All these measures that are supposedly needed to protect our population from methamphetamines are just more wasted attempts to protect our population from its own stupidity. If people want to do meth, they will do it. Period. You can make them aware of the consequences but at the end of the day the final call is theirs. The governments at any level do not need to be restricting the law abiding. If I need a bottle of cough syrup I should be able to walk into a store, grab it off the shelf and then go through the check-out line.

Just a quick question, what’s your experience with meth users? Do you know one, ever had to deal with one? I said goodbye to an 18 year marriage because of Meth. My kids, ages 15 and 17 have a drug addict for a daddy now. So what if I have to grab a tag on the shelf to get Sudafed, realistically how many damns times a year do you need Sudafed??? What do you suppose we do about the ever growing Meth addiction? Meth addicts are obsessive, manipulative, liars that have no will power, and will take and keep on taking until they end up dead or in jail, So I think its great that the gov’t can put up obstacles that might get in their destructive path. So what if it takes a little bit out of our convenient lives.

Meth is the drug dujour and it will naturally fall out of favor as the others have. How much do we hear about Ecstacy these days? Almost none. Same with Ketamine and GHB. I almost never hear those drugs talked about these days.

If the government wants us to not get high off crap, then they need to ban everything. Because with or without the psuedoephedrine you can get high off cough syrup in and of itself.

The government needs to work on better treatments than what the ancient disease model provides than restrictive “preventative” measures. There are other things they can do.

People reckon ban a drug and the abuse will stop.
Stupid people abuse drugs. They always will. It’s part of their stupidity.
Deanne, I’m sick of dipshits like your ex-squeeze screwing with our rights cos he’s too effed up to be a better man. While he’s playing happydysfunctionaltwot the rest of us have to go through hell to clear up a runny nose.
But I can imagine if that’s the sort of guy you’re attracted to, you DO need the government to make your decisions for you.

Funny thing too is that you can get high off the active ingredient in most cough syrups (Dextromethorphane).

It is an odd experience since I got a mild high once because I have a habit of taking shots from the bottle and never measuring.
