Harper Makes a Run at Gay Marriage

Posted on | January 27, 2006

Who did not see this one coming? Not even a week after conservative Tories won a minority government placing Steven Harper in charge, he has announced there will be another vote in Parliament on gay marriage. During the debates however the other three party leaders Paul Martin (Liberals), Jack Layton (NDP), and Gilles Duceppe (Bloc Québécois) nailed Harper on the issue. If a vote fell along the Tory line, the measure would fail with 124 (40%) voting for a repeal of gay marriage and 184 (60%) voting against it.

Why can these idiots not just leave well enough alone? Gay marriage has been a reality in Canada for about as long as it has in Massachsetts and Canadian society has yet to fall as well. Still waiting for those horsemen.

Here are my thoughts on this, and are similar to other Canadian politcal pundits.

Harper said he’d open up this ver tiresome debate with a free vote to appease the right wing wingnuts.

He will do it soon, as he knows there is a slim at best chance of it actually passing. Even if it does pass, it still would require the use of the notwithstanding clause. He has said repeatedly he won’t do that.

If he gets this out of the way, he will be hoping the memory of all the nuts coming out of the woodwork will be a distant enough memory when the next election is called in about 18 to 24 months from now.

I am so tired of hearing about this marriage shit, and I cringe at the thought of it being done all over again.

I just want to get this over with so he can say, “I did what I could.”

The other thing is that all the major cities shut the conservatives completely out. We are the key to a majority for him. He will want to handle us with care.

So I am more tired of the entire thing than worried that something will actually happen.

at http://www.marriagevote.ca they are doing research and tracking how the vote would go, its 154 to 152 for same sex marriage right now, changes daily. Libs 29 against, Cons 7 for, Bloc 6 against are the dissidents. Just yesterday her tally was equal for and against.

I just noticed that every single MP in Scarborough, all six, all Liberals, are all against same sex marriage. Thats a very high proportion of all the Liberals who are against it. From what I’ve heard Scarborough is largely an immigrant community, non-European background. I’m not racist, but this is scary, considering Toronto has the highest immigration rate (mostly Asian) of any city in the world. I wonder how long it will be before we are the most homophobic too.
