Colorado Bishop Says Gay Marriage Ban is an Act of Love
Posted on | February 1, 2006
Bishop Philip Porter, Jr., the leader of a Colorado coalition of religious wingnuts devoted to "saving marriage" claims that his organization and its members are performing "an act of love". I do not know whether or not to throw up or just simply bitch slap these people. If they were motivated out of "love", then they would not be engaging in an act of hatred. Because no matter how they spin it that is what they are doing.
People who actually buy into this bullshit are stupid too. You know how I feel about name calling, but there is no other possible explanation other than stupidity. What are they saving marriage from? Divorces, annulments, adultery, and other such problems existed long before the Defense of Marriage Acts, before Vermont passed its landmark civil union legislation, and before the very first lawsuit challenging discriminatory laws against gay marriage. People with even a basic knowledge of English history know that an entire religion was basically born out of the want for divorce.
Bishop Porter also brings out the tired old "only a mother and a father can raise a child right" bullshit. As if he suddenly forgot that there are thousands upon thousands of children being lovingly raised by one parent and in a lot of cases without support from the other parent.
Time and time again it has been said, and I have said it myself, that religion is the number one cause for pain, suffering, and human misery world-wide and with people like Bishop Porter, Benedict XVI aka the Nazi Pope, Osama bin Laden and any others who use religion as a facade for their hatred and bigotry are around and in positions of power. They need to be cleaning up their own houses before they start criticizing the neighbors’.
But in this whole marriage debate, I would like one simple question answered. How does enshrining hatred and ignorance in a state or the US Constitution strengthen a marriage?

Got a question for you. Do you think those who complain the loudest against gay marriage are closeted themselves?

I do think that reaction formation does play some part in it.
Most of it though is I think, and this is at the risk of violating Godwin’s Law, that it is more power-grabbing based on scapegoating much like Hitler did with the Jews.
Maragaret Cho makes a comment in her “Assassin” show about how the issue has been used by Republicans and their supporters as a lightning rod issue to get more voters for Bush and other Republican candidates.
