Have the Democrats Finally Clued in as to Why They Have Failed?

Posted on | February 8, 2006

Today’s New York Times published a story entitled ‘Some Democrats Are Sensing Missed Opportunities’ and I just about spat my Redbull out on my new laptop. It is so delightful to see that the morons in whom I am supposed to put my political faith in have finally caught up with the rest of us. What took you so fucking long? The Democrats have had a huge job in coming back to power since Clinton and the current batch we have does not seem to be up to the job or is just is incapable of doing it. Even some of the "better" ones have been backsliding.

One of the key things that keeps Republicans in power is the issue of national security. For some reason the voting public has it in their heads that we are somehow safer with Republicans. Why? We invaded Afghanistan because they refused to hand over Osama bin Laden which was justified. That was in 2001 and what happened? Osama bin Laden is still alive and at-large. What happened to the drive to smash al Qaeda once and for all after September 11th, 2001? I can tell you what happened to it, it was manipulated and channeled into a war based on lies. Occasionally we get reports that we knock off one or two legs in the form of bin Laden’s aides but they just regrow since the head is still there. Also, why has no Democrat actually asked for proof that the nation is safer? It is all specious reasoning at this point. We are safe from terrorist attacks because there have been no attempts to make them.

Issue upon issue the Democrats have failed to seize upon completely obvious issues that would exemplify failures in Republican leadership. Sure they have taken up some of them and done a half-assed job at it. Hillary Clinton got all pissed off about the report that 80% of US Marines who had been killed in Iraq would most likely still be alive if they had proper body armor as the standard issue armor did not protect the areas where the fatal injuries occurred. Clinton was so "outraged" that she demanded hearings from the Senate Armed Services Committee on which she sits. John Warner (R-VA) obliged her and held the hearings. Then I start seeing gloating on conservative blogs I read that Hillary Clinton did not even show up to the hearings she demanded. Instead of What kind of stupidity is this? Clinton apparently decided to have lunch with Harry Belefonte that day instead which was not the smartest move given the volatile nature of his recent comments about George W. Bush.

Things in Iran have been heating up to the point where that nation has threatened to cut off its oil exports. In case some of you are not familiar with the oil production numbers, Iran is number two in terms of production behind Saudi Arabia. What does this mean for everyday US citizens like you and me? That the over $3 gas prices we paid after Hurricane Katrina were just a preview and the feature presentation will be much worse. Exxon reports record profits and was so scared of the reaction it tried to downplay the news. Barely a murmur of out of the Democrats.

In the article John Kerry is quoted as saying that "Our megaphone is just not as large as their megaphone, and we have a harder time getting that message out, even when people are on the same page." Your megaphone is just as big Kerry, the problem is what is coming out of it is inane and pointless and people like you have not clued into that fact yet. This is why you need to shut your mouth and let someone else try to become the leader.

My suggestion to the Democratic party is to silence the rabid anti-Bush faction within the party. The 2004 election and Kerry’s failure should have already shown you that the tactic is not sound. Even with gems like the illegal domestic spying, you cannot bank on getting rid of Bush. Even if you did, we would be stuck with Cheney or some other Republican because you have failed to produce a candidate that can actually pose a real threat to Republican power. The second thing I would like to say is keep the Abramoff issue alive but do not place all your money on it either. Like the "But I’m not George W. Bush" tactic, this will not work either for the same reason. Not to mention the fact that it only appeals to the people who care more about ethics than they about whether the corrupt Republican in question can actually do the job of representing the district/state. Do not bank on what happened in Canada to happen here either. While polls indicate the public is getting tired with the twelve years of Republican rule, do not expect that alone to bring them to the polls and to vote for a Democrat. Like in 2004, some people will vote Republican even if they would prefer not to because they know how they will get screwed over as opposed to Democrats who may be better, or may be worse and the voter is not willing to take the chance that it is worse.

What you need to do is actually present viable alternatives. I know that it is new and shocking for some of you and I know that you will want to have me burned as a witch or something, but just simple reflection on 2004 should be enough to convince you I am right. The way I read the Kerry versus Bush election looked a little something like this:

Bush: I will fuck the nation over this way, that way, and this other way.
Kerry: I’m not Bush.
Bush: I vow to enshrine bigotry and discrimination into the document that is supposed to combat it.
Kerry: I’m not Bush.
Bush: I promise to cut taxes for the rich, give positions of power to my buddies in spite of the fact they are grossly unqualified.
Kerry: I’m not Bush.
Bush: I will force everyone to adhere to my beliefs and supposed values whether they want to or not.
Kerry: I’m not Bush.

Notice the trend?

Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) seems to be clued in more than most though. "First is to convince the American people that what’s happening in Washington is not working. We have achieved that. Now we have to, at this stage, convince people that we are the ones to bring positive change." Thank you Senator Boxer!
