Bush Budget Cuts Education and Healthcare but Includes $500 Million to Exclude Gay Marriage

Posted on | February 9, 2006

PageOneQ provided me with a lovely link to a news story reported by KAIT TV out of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Since Bush turned Clinton’s government surplus into a record deficit projected to hit $427 billion this year. In his budget plan involving $2.5 trillion in cuts to education, medicare, law enforcement grants, and 150 other programs. This is, of course, to free up more and more resources for his Family Feud - Extreme Edition in Iraq. Even some military programs will be cut.

According to The Washington Post reports some of the following terminations and cuts in the budget plan:

  • Termination of the US Air Force Advanced Fighter Program
  • Termination of the Navy Stealth Destroyer Program
  • Termination of the Navy Next Generation Nuclear Subs
  • Billions in cuts to the missile defense shield Bush claims we "need"
  • $1.3 billion in cuts to law enforcement grants
  • $4.3 billion across 48 education programs including $2.2 billion in cuts to high school vocational programs
  • $440 million in Drug-Free School grants
  • $225 million in literacy grants
  • $280 million for the Upward Bound program for inner-city youths
  • Termination of all subsidies to Amtrak
  • $20 million for the Next Generation Rail program
  • $250 million in railroad rehabilitation
  • $94 million for grants in the Healthy Communities Access Program
  • Termination of Community Food & Nutrition Program
  • $143 million in a program to remove severely dilapidated housing

Bush and his supporters claim that the slack created by these cuts will be consolidated and picked up by other programs which critics say ends up in less money being given out. Vice President Dick Cheney is quoted as saying that ":once people sit down and have a chance to look at the budget, that it is a fair, reasonable, responsible, serious piece of effort" during an interview on Fox News. Since Bush took office in 2001, I expect them to be anything but fair, reasonable, or responsible. If he wants a really good budget cut, try reducing our forces in Iraq and bringing our military home. The UK has begin talking about withdrawing its troops. The US can actually reduce its presence to just being a participant in a multi-national force under the UN.

However in all the cuts to domestic programs George W. Bush decided to throw us a bone and feels that we simply cannot survive as Americans by spending $500 million on promoting heterosexual marriage and the exclusion of gay marriage. Is he not the nicest guy? But I guess I can understand Bush and his administration’s logic, cut things like education and that reduces the chances of people to gain more knowledge. Less education means more people will blindly accept the bullshit they spoon feed us and expect us to swallow. That $500 million is a waste of money and anyone with half a brain should be able to see that. He could cut that program and keep almost half of the law enforcement grants or something that actually benefits society. I know, a shocking suggestion.
