Ohio Gay Adoption Ban Dead, Sponsor Swears to Continually Reintroduce It

Posted on | February 11, 2006

Leaders for both the Republican and Democratic members of Ohio’s state legislature have said that the draconian bill proposed by ten right-wing Republicans to ban gay adoption is dead in the water. The proposed bill., HB 515, would have banned adoption for the following reasons:

  • The individual is a homosexual, bisexual, or transgender individual
  • The individual is a step-parent of the child to be adopted and is a homosexual, bisexual, or transgender individual
  • he individual resides with an individual who the court determines is a homosexual, bisexual, or transgender individual

The bill was sponsored by the following legislator, all Republicans:

  • Tom Brickman, Jr.
  • Danny R. Bulp
  • Stephen Buehrer
  • Mike Gilb
  • Ronald Edward Hood
  • James M. Hoops
  • Linda Reidelbach
  • Tim Schaffer
  • Derrick Seaver
  • John R. Willamowski

State House Speaker, Jon A. Husted (R-Kettering) railed the bill stating "Most reasonable people would have a preference for being in a loving, alternative setting rather than an abusive, heterosexual setting." I could not have said it better myself I think. He hits the nail square on the head almost. In spite of propaganda like Stephen Bennett’s "Straight Talk Radio" interview with "Charles", a man raised by homosexuals, it all comes down to denying the child a loving setting.

One thing I notice as a researcher is that no one really looks at Florida anymore. Thanks to Anita Bryant Florida is the only state that actually has a sweeping ban on homosexual adoption. Yet we heard headlines about kids ending up in bad homes and so forth. Some of those problems are the fault of the department in charge of overseeing that but, all the staffing and infrastructure problems aside, there will be continued placement of children in bad homes independent of the adopter’s sexual orientation. Florida stands as evidence that sexuality is not the source of that problem. So any attempts to ban gay marriage are essentially done out of bigotry and serves no other purpose than to hurt children in the end by denying them homes with people who actually want them.

Ronald Edward Hood, the chief sponsor of the bill, swears that if his bill does not see a floor vote, he will continuously reintroduce it until it does. In the mean time Husted, along with Democratic leaders, have other things in mind to deal with like job creation and other issues that actually benefit society.

Thankfully someone still has their senses in the Ohio legislature.

Below is an email I have sent to Ohio sponsors of this horrid bill:

As a product of the foster care system of the state of Ohio, I say, ” Shame on you and your misquided bill.”

I languished in foster care for 12years and would have chewed off my right foot to have a parent , ANY PARENT, gay or straight who would have taken me in and showed me love and taught me how to become a productive person.

Instead, I was abused by an uncaring system that left me disconected and worthless. I turned to alcohol and drugs to numb the pain of being unwanted. It took me 20years to recover, become sober, go to college, and start my own family.

Your bill not only will create more tragedies like mine, but further stigmatizes gays and lesbians. The only problem with them is people like you who demonize them. Clean your own house and soul and leave it to God to judge the sinners form the saints.

In the meantime, you will condemn thousands of children you are trying to “protect.”

I weep. The children weep. God weeps.
