The Democrats’ “Jeff Gannon” is No Jeff Gannon

Posted on | February 21, 2006

Bruce, the Gay Patriot, made a post the other night about "The Democrats’ Jeff Gannon". He is referring to Tom Malin, a Democrat, who is running for the Texas District 108 seat in the state legislature. It has been reported that Malin once was homosexual prostitute and that has become an issue of his campaign that he is working through. This has drawn comparisons to right-wing fake journalist Jeff Gannon who was also exposed as a homosexual prostitute. It has been used to criticize people on the left, especially those who were highly critical of Gannon’s presence in the Whitehouse press room like John Aravosis of AmericaBlog.

Our Gay Patriot misses the point with Gannon in that the two are completely different things. What Gay Patriot misses is the fact that the Jeff Gannon scandal surrounded more about who he was and what he was doing rather than his past as a military gay prostitute. The fact he was a male prostitute was just par for the course. The problem people had with Gannon, besides misrepresenting himself, was that a supposed journalist with no credentials somehow got through Whitehouse security checks and got a daily press pass. He came to attention after real Whitehouse reporters began to suspect him of being a plant given the softball, friendly nature of his questions during Whitehouse briefings. Additionally, Secret Service logs showed Gannon moving around the Whitehouse on days there were no press events so he would have had no business being there. Not to mention that the supposed "news agency" Gannon worked for was really just a propaganda machine run by Bush buddy Robert Earle and ceased operations after the Gannon scandal broke.

On the other-hand we have Tom Malin who is a self-proclaimed born-again Christian who is actually owning up to his past and talking about it openly. Also, Malin is someone who feels that he can make a difference in Texas state politics and is running for office with that in mind. I fail to see how that compares to a fake journalist whose sole purpose was to deflect critical journalists at Whitehouse press briefings. Apples, meet Volkswagen.
