Ohio Lawmaker Proposes Ban on Republican Adoption
Posted on | February 24, 2006
I had to bust out laughing when I read on RawStory how an Ohio legislators has proposed a law that would ban Republicans from adopting children. Sate Senator Robert Hagan, D-Youngstown, did this as a response to the draconian attempt of State Representative Ron Hood, R-Asheville, and several other Republicans to bad gay adoption. As previously reported here and in other blogs, Hood’s proposed law would ban anyone who was lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered from adoption kids. Additionally if a heterosexual individual had a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered family member living with them, they would also be banned. Hood’s bill was killed by Republican leadership citing other, more pressing concerns like job creation and refused to even bring it to the floor for a vote. Hood vowed to continuously reintroduce the legislation until it gets a full vote.
While the legislation was written as a joke, Hagan wtore the legislation to illustrate the point that Hood’s proposed ban on gay adoption is not in the best interests of children and serves only to be divisive, discriminatory legislation based in bigotry and homophobia. Hagan also states, like the Republican house leaders who killed Hood’s bill, that there are other concerns Ohio needs to deal with.
"It flies in the face of reason when we need to reform our education system, address health care and environmental issues that we put energy and wasted time [into] legislation like [Hood's]"
