Paying Credit Cards Equals Homeland Security Investigation
Posted on | March 7, 2006
With people like Suze Orman guiding the way, a lot of Americans are getting their financial acts together and getting out of debt. Paying of high interest credit cards and making sure payments are on time is the mantra of today’s fiscally responsible individual in the cult of the FICO score. However a new player has entered into the game… the Department of Homeland Security. This is because you are apparently a terrorist if you make a large payment on your credit cards as one Rhode Island couple found out when they paid down the balance on their Mastercard to the sum of about $6,500.
The payment, deemed larger than a normal monthly payment, required a call to Homeland Security under changes made to the Bank Privacy Act in the wake of the September 11th, 2001, attacks on New York City and Washington, DC. These modifications require financial institutions to report suspicious financial transactions which apparently paying off a credit card balance in the thousands qualifies for.
Ever since September 11th, 2001, this nation has been in the grips of imagined terrorists bordering on pathological paranoia. We see terrorists everywhere, freaking out because someone who is not caucasian is taking a flying lesson. We ban folk singers and children from flying in the nation’s airspace. And now we have bullshit like this. We were told that we need even stricter pre-flight screening using a system that was going to check our credit reports, neglecting the fact the old system worked fine and would have caught all but a few of the September 11th hijackers who walked through a loophole because they did not check luggage. We have our own government spying on us because if you dissent, you are a terrorist or a terrorist sympathizer.
Congratulations America, we keep showing that terrorists really can win and achieve what they want.
