Americas Next Top Bigot

I finally got around to watching the premier of the sixth season of America’s Next Top Model. As usual the first episode deals with casting and getting the final thirteen girls from thirty-some
This season brought us Dani, an eighteen year old from Spring Texas that describes herself in her audition tape as an "uber-conservative Republican hardcore baptist you can ever imagine in your whole life." She then goes on to say the following:
I don’t like gay people. I don’t like Muslims. I don’t like abortions. I don’t like anything liberal. But, other than that-I really like to get along with people.
She probably got only a few minutes of camera time as she did not survive the second cut. However what she gave the cameras was pure gold like her racist comments at dinner and her declaration that no one can call her racist because she knows she is not. She also has been getting a lot of attention elsewhere as the video was featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC where he described her as "delightfully, refreshingly crazy" and on E!’s The Soup where host Joe McHale cracked jokes about Dani appearing on the covers of magazines like "Modern Racist", "Better Homes & Crosses", and "White People".
In her time before the panel of Tyra Banks, Jay Manuel, and J. Alexander, Dani was called on the carpet about her homophobia given the amount of homosexuals in the fashion industry. In response to that being pointed out to her, Dani pulls the tired religion card and talks about her "moral obligation to her church" and how she does not agree with the lifestyle. Personally I think that if Tyra or either of the Jays had beaten Dani upside the head she would still not have gotten what they were trying to say. Back during the third season Tyra had to talk with Yaya about certain aspects of her attitude that were a bit bitchy and condescending. Tyra warned her that word spreads and no one would want to work with her. Dani is putting herself in that same situation. If I were a designer I certainly would not be having Miss Dani in any of my shows. If I were a hair/make-up person and I was supposed to work on Dani, I would simply tell her "You have a moral obligation to your church, honey? Well maybe your church ca come do your hair and make-up cuz I ain’t touchin’ you."
One thing that rather shocked me was her little interview after the panel. Dani had the nerve to bitch about how Tyra and the Jays were not "more open minded". Excuse me? You state on video, which airs on national television in a popular show, that you are homophobic, racist, and a bunch of other things and you demand other people be more open minded about you? Then she spews some platitudes about how you cannot control where and how you are raised. I concede those points, however she is fully in control of her homophobia and racism. Unless she cares to admit she is not capable of having a single independent thought.

If she’s only 18, there may be some hope for her once she gets out into the big, bad world. Anyway, if she’s such a big Baptist, how can she be a model and strut around half naked on a runway or in front of a camera? I’m feeling a bit of cognitive dissonance here….

That was a good post, what you said made sense. I’m still too shocked to think straight when I come upon these ignorant and bigoted attitudes toward gays, especially since I look up to them, as a psychiatric consumer-activist, the gay community has been a ruling inspiration, so it just knocks me flat to see what’s happening again, or still…
Anyway, keep swinging, glad I found the site.
