Family Research Council Calls Matthew Shepard a Work of Fiction

Posted on | April 25, 2006

The Family Research Council apparently has been falling more than a little behind in its "research". In his Washington Update
newsletter, FRC president Tony Perkins as criticizing the three judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals which recently ruled against granting an injunction of Tyler Chase Harper who was punished for wearing a homophobic t-shirt in 2004. In a rant against Judge Stephen Reinhardt, Perkins noted the following:

Reinhardt substantiates his claim that homosexuals are a persecuted minority, in part, by pointing to Hollywood’s Brokeback Mountain and The Matthew Shepard Story - two works of fiction.

Now obviously Brokeback Mountain is a work of fiction but calling The Matthew Shepard Story fiction just goes to show that Perkins either has no clue what he talks about or are just plain vicious. The Matthew Shepard Story is a docu-drama about the trial of Matthew Shepard’s killers and the motivation for Dennis and Judy Shepard to not seek the death penalty for Aaron McKinney.

But then again I guess Tony Perkins is used to dealing with fiction since his organization is based on fiction.

Tony Perkins really is an idiot. A couple of weeks ago he had a rant over The Da Vinci Code: A Novel. He stated that the Greek word Gnosis meant “secret” and then based his argument against the novel around this. Gnosis, in Greek, means “knowledge.” So much for his own gnosis…
