Amercas Next Top Bigot Almost Rides Again

Posted on | May 11, 2006

Even though she never made it past the second cut during the casting for America’s Next Top Model cycle six, Dani, an eighteen year-old from Spring, Texas made a splash with her racist attitudes like commenting on how when she went to the audition it was like "95% black girls", comments made at the big group dinner, and infamous audition video statement of:

I don’t like gay people. I don’t like Muslims. I don’t like abortions. I don’t like anything liberal. But, other than that, I really like to get along with people.

This morning’s episode of The Tyra Show featured updates on some of the girls from previous seasons of America’s Next Top Model. In introducing the segment, Tyra even referred to Dani as the girl who "just may be the most memorable aspiring model in the history of the show." The lead up showed clips of Dani in action. After it was over Tyra made announced that while Dani had been invited to appear and had come to the studio, she backed out after reviewing the footage. My guess is that she would have gotten the smack-down because two of the guests were Xiomara and Bre from cycles two and five respectively who are both African-American, April from cycle two who is half-Asian, Sarah from cycle two whose father is Muslim, Naima from the fourth cycle who is multi-racial and Michelle from cycle four who is a bi-sexual wrestler.

Tyra decided to discuss Dani with the girls appearing on the show and asked if them if they felt that Dani was not "being real" and was just acting for the camera to draw attention to herself. April made a comment that had me almost falling out of my chair with laughter. She said "she sounded like she was trying to be on [MTV's] The Real World or something." When I was watching the tape and when I watched it back in March when America’s Next Top Model cycle 6 premiered I did get the sense that she was trying the route of getting cast by showing the producers that she could be a good source of drama for the show as individuals like Camille and Eva had in past cycles.

In response to her comments after a dressing down by Tyra, Mr. Jay Manuel, and Miss J Alexander, Dani complained that they should be more understanding of her and how she did not choose to come from where she did. April said:

"The words that came out of her mouth were ‘people need to stop judging me and they need to remember I don’t choose where I come from.’ Well guess what Dani, people don’t choose to be gay, people don’t choose to be black, people don’t choose to be Asian or Muslim. So she needs to take that mirror and flip it on herself and realize the words that she is saying and how they come across and she is exactly what she says she hates."

April is right. Dani, and others like her, stand there and tell about how they dislike other people for various, superficial reasons like homosexuality yet whine when someone states their dislike of her and those like her for the same reasons.
